Use of laser to make a hole in the back wall of the capsule that becomes opaque after cataract surgery.
The natural lens of the eye is like a transparent bag (the capsule) filled with layers of protein. When the protein layer(s) become opaque it is called a cataract. To remove the cataract a circular opening is made in the front wall and all the opaque material is removed. The new implant is placed in the bag. In some individuals the back wall goes opaque after months or years. This is called posterior capsule opacification or thickening. When this happens the vision becomes blurred. This is treated with a simple procedure where a hole is made in the back wall with the YAG Laser. This is an outpatient procedure.
Cataract is the commonest operation performed on the human body. YAG Laser capsulotomy is the second commonest operation.
